The 71st winner of the St Leger, held on Wednesday 16th September 1846 over 1 mile 6 furlongs and 132 yards of Town Moor, was Sir Tatton Sykes, a bay colt by Melbourne out of a dam of Margrave, owned by Mr William Scott. A field of 12 runners contested the race, although there were 149 subscriptions of 50 sovereigns each, which was worth 7450 sovereigns.
